Purple Fountain Grass is often known as Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’. This is the old favorite for containers and seasonal color beds in colder climates. In zones 9-11, it lives year-round in the heat. With its dark burgundy foliage and paler pink plumes, this is a classic thriller for a container. This dramatic grass with arching foliage will reach 3-4 feet tall with a width of 2-3 feet.
Purple Fountain grass will fit in just about any garden situation. It outperforms other grasses in color and texture in rock gardens, mass borders, and as an accent to draw attention to a specific part of the garden. Purple Fountain grass is easy to maintain, as it needs very little attention for pruning and will thrive in most soils. It does like water, so be sure it gets its share on a weekly basis.
