“Little Miss” Dwarf Maiden Grass | Miscanthus sinensis 'Little Miss'

Plant Facts:

Developed by German breeder Klaus Menzel, “Little Miss” Dwarf Maiden Grass is a thin-leafed, tall ornamental grass that grows in arching clumps of two to three feet tall and wide. A dwarf variety, it is an ideal accent for container gardens, border gardens, rock gardens, around water features, and more. It grows in green tones in the spring, then develops into rich purple and red hues all summer, with the colors becoming most vibrant in the fall. The center of the plant will remain green through most of the growing season, creating a multicolored effect. This ornamental grass grows red, silky tassels that turn into feathery, cream-colored plumes in the fall as they open. These tassels and plumes create movement in the garden as they gently sway in the wind, and they are also a wonderful addition to a floral arrangement, fresh or dried.

“Little Miss” is hardy and easy to grow, and it loves full sun. It grows in zones 4-9, adapts well to most soil types, and grows best in well-drained soils. It is draught tolerant and deer and disease resistant. It attracts birds both for shade and nesting and is helpful in controlling erosion as well. It grows quickly and is perennial. It can be trimmed back to just a few inches tall in the late winter or early spring to allow for new growth. Tying the grass in a bundle with rope or string can help hold it for clipping. Like most grass varieties, trimming back the plumes before they seed will keep this grass from self-propagating. This compact variety of maiden grass will bring rich tones and gentle movement to any garden.
