The tree for hot and or wet condiotions.

From November to March this plant may ship without leaves. It is a deciduous species.

The Dura Heat River Birch is a gorgeous shade tree with exfoliating bark in whites, pinks, and cinnamon and dark green leaves that turn a buttery yellow each fall. This deciduous tree grows quickly, has a dense canopy to provide shade, and adds charm to any garden, making it a favorite choice as an ornamental or accent tree.

It is a great size for any landscape, growing 30 to 40 feet tall and 20 to 30 feet wide. It grows upward in a pyramidal branching form and can be trained with a single trunk or allowed to grow naturally to split near the ground into several arching branches. It can even be trained into a smaller shrub form. There are numerous possibilities and uses for this lovely tree.

Care

Dura Heat thrives in full sun, so pick a sunny spot with space for the tree to reach its mature size. This lovely tree can be a stand-alone feature, or it can be planted in mass. If mass planting, allow 15 to 20 feet of space between trees.

It does well in wet conditions, but does not like standing water around its base. If planting in a low or wet area, create a mound about two feet high for the tree's root ball to be above the wet area to avoid root rot. Anywhere else in the landscape, dig twice the width and the same depth or a little above the depth of the container to keep the root ball from settling and pooling water.

Water thoroughly and add  a few inches of mulch, pulling it a few inches away from the trunk. Water it deeply the first few growing seasons as it establishes. Water it as it goes into winter as well to keep it from drying out. Fertilize it with a slow-release fertilizer each spring.

Pruning is rarely required for the Dura Heat. Prune to remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches. If desired, this tree can be trained to a single trunk or trimmed to a smaller shrub form. Low branches can also be removed if desired for a taller canopy. Prune in the late spring or early summer after the first leaves begin to open to avoid the tree bleeding sap.

Uses in the Landscape

Dura heat is both hot and cold hardy, growing in zones 4 to 9. In warmer zones, it will need additional water. This river birch can be planted near water features or along the border of a rain garden. It is also a natural water filtration system. It is a showy tree that grows to a medium size, so it is a great focal plant for any landscape. It is adaptable to various conditions as long as it has moist, well drained soil. The Dura Heat is also nontoxic and a safe choice near corrals and pens.

Companion Plants

Since Dura Heat has a shallow root system, a ground cover will grow well around it as well as reduce the amount of trimming, which could harm the revealed roots of the tree. Chocolate Chip Ajuga's rich, dark color is a wonderful contrast to the white bark of the Dura Heat, and it only needs to be trimmed once yearly.

Corksrew Rush Spiralis is a water loving plant, so it is right at home resting in the partial shade beneath the edges the Dura Heat's branches. The Butterfly Bush will complement the white bark of the Dura Heat and the beautiful green corksrew foliage of the spiralis, but it should be planted just outside of the Dura Heat's canopy so it receives ample sunlight.

Little Henry Sweetspire can be planted about ten feet from the Dura Heat's trunk to give ample room for both plants' root systems. This moisture-loving shrub blooms beautiful white bottlebrush flowers to complement the Dura Heat's bark, then bold fall colors that will complement the river birch's fall display.
