Fisherman’s dream tree!
Catalpa tree or Catawba tree is a southern favorite species for many different ways. A large, fast-growing tree reaching 40-60 feet tall and 30-40 feet wide with a beautiful symmetrical-rounded shape. Catalpa has very large dark green leaves 10” long and 8” wide that offers excellent shade qualities in the heat of the season. Usually in late spring, Catalpa tree will bloom white bell-shaped flowers speckled with pink and purple flecks that invite many beneficial pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds making it a top pollinator for the garden. After blooming, 8-12” long cigar=like bean pods remain on the tree throughout the winter months.
Catalpa is a care free tree and easy to maintain. Most soils are perfect to have success, but we always recommend adding a good source of organic material to increase growth and general health. Once established, Catalpa will take care of itself as it a tough tree and can survive in dry and wet situations.
Fisherman’s natural fish-bait tree!
Fresh water fishermen love this tree for the gift of catalpa worms! A very sought out tree for organic-bait. Usually in June-July, the worms come and eat the leaves of the tree for about 3 weeks. These yellow and black crawlers are sought out by “old timers” to catch bream, bass, and catfish. A time-honored tradition that is being passed along to the younger generation for an organic solution from plastic baits. Harvesting is easy, many use a pole or rope thrown over limbs and shake the tree till the worm hits the ground. Use gloves when harvesting, the worm will excrete a yellow-green fluid when grabbed.
If there a bumper crop and you would like to keep some for future uses, simply bring a pot of water to a low boil, add the worms for about a minute until they stiffen, spread the worms on a paper towel to dry, once dried put the worms in a zip-lock bag with cornmeal and they can be frozen for future fishing adventures.
