Cat's Pajamas Catmint is a long-blooming perennial that will steal the show with its indigo flowers and minty scent. It is drought, deer, and rabbit resistant and grows in zones 3-9. Cat’s Pajamas is a dwarf variety of catmint; it reaches a height of 12-14 inches and a spread of 18-20 inches, making it a perfect choice for smaller spaces.
It is an outstanding plant for attracting bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. It is also nontoxic to people and pets. It is in the catnip family, and cats adore it. Use as a border plant, in containers, or as the focal point of the garden.
Its flowers extend from the soil to its tip and grow in a ball-like growth pattern along a spike, with an appearance like a fluffy cat tail. After it flowers, purple calyxes continue to add interest. This catmint is very low maintenance and easy to grow, making it a great choice for gardeners of any experience level.
Care
Plant Cat’s Pajamas in well-drained soil in a hole the same depth as its container and twice as wide. Cat’s Pajamas should be spaced a minimum of 18 inches apart when being planted in mass. It is an easy plant to grow as it has low water needs, grows well in most soil types, and is tolerant of almost all PH levels.
Catmint does best with little to no fertilizer, as over fertilization can hinder its flower production and cause it to droop. Add a thin layer of compost mulch instead of traditional fertilizer.
Prune Cat's Pajamas by half in late winter or early spring to encourage regrowth. Sheer plants after the initial flowering to encourage a fuller plant and a second blooming. Cat’s Pajamas needs at least six hours of full sun per day but prefers some afternoon shade. New plants should be watered often until matured and are heat and drought resistant once established.
Uses in the Landscape
With its beautiful indigo blue flowers, Cat’s Pajamas catmint is a wonderful choice for any garden. Plant along paths or as a border plant to encourage pollinators. As a smaller plant, it is a perfect choice for containers. It adds a unique color to cut flowers as well. It is a good ground cover plant for roses and other leggy plants. It also works as a great accent plant to provide color to evergreens. It is nontoxic, making it a safe choice around children and pets.
Companion Plants
Primavera Spanish Lavender, with its purple spiral flowers, is a beautiful choice to plant with Cat’s Pajamas. It grows upright like catmint and will complement the indigo color of Cat’s Pajamas well. It pairs well because it is also an excellent pollinator, works well in containers or as cut flowers, will help repel pests, and has a sweet scent.
Pugster Blue Butterfly Bush is a great plant to grow with Cat’s Pajamas. Its conical bluish-purple flowers compliment the indigo blue tones of Cat’s Pajamas. It is also a pollinator friendly plant and works best in well drained soils. Plant Cat’s Pajamas around the base of this bush to fill around its roots.
Plant Cat’s Pajamas with Foxtail Fern to add brilliant blue to this evergreen all summer long. Since this fern is a smaller plant, growing up to 2 feet tall, it won’t overshadow Cat’s Pajamas. Like catmint, it is an easy plant to care for, requiring little watering or pruning.
