Cat’s Meow is an extremely versatile and hardy plant, Cat’s Meow catmint can be planted in a variety of ways. Use it as a border plant or as a groundcover under shrubs or along paths. This full, low-growing perennial covers the bare lower stems of taller shrubs, such as roses. It is deer, rabbit, and pest resistant, making it the perfect complement for plants that are susceptible to pests.
Cat's Meow grows in bushy, upright clumps, with gray-green foliage. It reaches 17 to 20 inches tall and 24 to 36 inches wide. It thrives in well drained acidic soils. It is a low maintenance plant, making it great for beginner gardeners.
Its periwinkle spiral flowers are a beautiful choice to add a splash of cool tomes to any garden. Its small flowers bloom all along the spike. The catmint’s fragrance is a pleasant but subtle mint aroma. An outstanding pollinator, bees and hummingbirds can’t resist its charm. It blooms from early summer into the fall for lasting enjoyment all season.
Care
Cat’s Meow prefers full sun, needing at least six hours each day. It is tolerant to a variety of soil types, has average water needs, and once established, it is drought resistant. It prefers afternoon shade in warmer climates to help it avoid the hottest part of the day.
In early spring, cut back brown stems close to the ground to tidy and refresh the plant. Flower spikes should also be sheared after the initial flowering to promote new growth and repeat blooming. Water new plants until they become established. Cat’s Meow does not need to be fertilized often, as it can lead to fewer flowers; fertilize it only as needed.
Space the plant 18 inches apart to allow ample room for root development. Dig a hole the same depth as its container and twice the width. Backfill with the same soil and water often until the plant is established. Add mulch to help maintain moisture.
Uses in the Landscape
As a hardy, deer and drought resistant plant, Cat’s Meow is the perfect border plant for any garden, spreading cascading waves of purple blue blooms all summer. It grows in zones 3 - 9 and adapts well to just about any type of well-drained soil. Its bushy, gray-green stems fill beds and spill around the edges of borders and walkways.
As a groundcover plant, it compliments bushes, shrubs, and perennials or can be used as a filler plant for small flower beds. It is also nontoxic to people and pets, and cats love its aroma. The possibilities are endless with this bountiful catmint!
Companion Plants
Winter Gem Boxwood makes for a great complimentary shrub for Cat’s Meow. Its compact shape won’t block the sun like other shrubs. It has similar water and soil needs to Cat's Meow, making it the perfect pairing. Its green foliage is the perfect canvas for Cat’s Meow and its fluffy blue spiral flowers.
Lemon Yellow Echinacea is a great companion for Cat’s Meow. Both plants grow to around the same size so they will grow together for a beautiful bouquet of yellow and blue. Jolly Good Clematis with its royal purple flowers can be intertwined with Cat’s Meow to offer an explosion of cool blue and purple colors. As a groundcover or climbing plant, it is versatile enough either to complement Cat’s Meow in containers or coexist as a ground cover around bushes and shrubs.
