Clematis is making a great comeback into the garden world. Know as an “Granma’s vine”, we are seeing a resurgence for this neat vine. Clematis is delicate vine but is actually is very strong and study once it is established. It thrives in full sun and part shade, so its uses are expanded for most landscapes. A bonus with Clematis is that it thrives in sun, shade, or both. Clematis is quite hardy and take cold as well as heat. Here in Alabama, where the humidity and heat both reach into the 100% and 100◦ range it fairs very well. It will thrive in cooler regions too, living in zone 4.
Montana Ruben's is a large climber that will thrill any landscape area. Soft pink flowers that give off so much fragrance (a sweet vanilla smell) it is overwhelmingly intoxicating. The foliage stays nice through out the season not letting you down with crispy-burn leaves. Much hardier than most, Montana Ruben's will go one cold zone higher to zone 3. It has done well down south here in Alabama, with little issues due to heat and humidity.
Best paired on fences, arbors, and large trellis Montana Ruben's will go and go for 20-40’, making an excellent cover. Remember Clematis love their faces in the sun, but their feet in the shade. Mulch extra heavy to keep roots cool and moist. The more you trim, the better the blooming of your Clematis.
