Husker Red Penstemon grows with deep red foliage that boasts up to 50 bell shaped white to light pink blooms. These gorgeous flowers are early growers, producing in late spring and
summer, but the plant continues its interest throughout the year with its wine colored foliage. The flowers grow about 1 inch in diameter and attract bees and hummingbirds alike. This small
perennial grows 12-30 inches high and 15-18 inches wide. Husker Red Penstemon is known for its award winning beauty, winning 1996 Perennial of the Year from the Perennial Plant Association.

Care

Husker Red Penstemon grows best in average, moist, and well drained soil. Plant it in an area of full sun for maximum blooming. Husker Red penstemon needs steady watering when first
planting, but once the plant is established, it is both drought tolerant and waterwise. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer in late winter or early spring. Be careful not to over fertilize as this will
create more dieback in the winter. Add a layer of mulch around its crowns to protect its roots and combat weed growth. Husker Red Penstemon can be pruned in after the first frost, and it will maintain its beauty for a
few more weeks. Deadhead in winter or prune it more lightly to leave the seed heads, which will attract songbirds for continued interest. When planting Husker Red Penstemon, dig a hole the same depth as the container it came in and twice as deep. Remember to water and backfill.

Uses in the Landscape

Husker Red Penstemon is perfect for borders in perennial gardens and in containers. Plant it along paths or small gardens. Husker Red Penstemon is a great choice for cut flowers too. Its beautiful white flowers are perfect additions to bouquets. Husker Red Penstemon is low maintenance and easy to grow and is native to the United States, so its not invasive. Both deer and rabbit resistant, this pretty perennial is a must for attracting pollinators, especially butterflies. It grows in zones 3-9, making it versatile and tough enough for almost any garden.

Companion Plants

Little Kitten Dwarf Maiden Grass, with its showy green foliage, pairs perfectly with Husker Red Penstemon. Plant it around the border with Husker Red and enjoy it all season long, even into winter, as both these plants will offer year-round interest.
Tomato Soup Coneflower offers stunning red blooms that contrast perfectly with the white flowers of the Husker Red Penstemon. Plant both together to create beauty and interest in the landscape. Lemon Yellow Echinacea is a gorgeous coneflower that offers brilliant yellow blooms to the landscape. It pairs perfectly with Husker Red Penstemon, offering contrasting size and color. Plant these pretty perennials in containers or around the landscape and enjoy all year long.
