Plant Highlights
The Green Twister Coneflower is a mid-sized plant with large, 4-inch, daisy-like blooms, and sturdy stems. It grows 3 – 4 feet tall and up to 2 feet wide, and its vibrant flowers have a pink to lilac inner halo and a chartreuse outer halo pattern. In the fall, the inner halo darkens to a crimson color; this variation on each petal creates vibrant color in the garden. The leaves are dark green and course, and they have a serrated pattern along their edges. The tall central cone is unique to this flower; it is a bronze, conical disk, and the coneflower’s scientific name and common name are both based on this urchin-looking central disk. All parts of the coneflower are edible, and many gardeners use this flower in teas. The Green Twister is perfect in a medicinal or herb garden, a wildflower garden, or any sunny spot that needs a pop of color all summer and fall.
A North American native, the coneflower is a favorite food source for bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies, as well as for a variety of birds in the winter when the seed heads dry. It is a very easy flower to grow and care for, and it is long blooming, producing blooms from midsummer to the first frost. It has strong stems that stand easily, and its flowers can be cut for fresh or dried arrangements. It is very low maintenance and will thrive in any soil with good drainage, preferring well drained soils.
The Green Twister is resistant to deer, pests, and disease. It also tolerates drought, humidity, heat, and cold very well. It overwinters well, and a layer of mulch will help protect its roots. Also, cutting back the stems to prevent blooms the first year helps it establish a stronger root system. It grows in zones 3 – 9 and enjoys full sun or even partial shade in Southern regions. A perennial, this vibrant plant brings a cheerfulness to the garden year after year, is an interesting winter feature, inviting all types of bird and pollinators to the garden.
