Plant Highlights

The Green Jewel coneflower is a mounding plant with upright flowers growing on sturdy stems. The leaves are covered in coarse hairs and are rough to the touch. They are dark green and have saw-toothed edges. The plant is 20 – 24 inches tall and 18 – 20 inches wide. The center cone is dark green, and petals bloom rich green and transform into a bright lime color, eventually fading to a minty white. The flower heads are large, measuring 4 – 5 inches across. They have a soft, delightful honey fragrance and attract a variety of pollinators to the garden. Coneflowers are native to the United States, but this variety was discovered by Piet Oudolf in an open pollination environment in the Netherlands in 2005 and is unique in that it is a fully green variety, as most coneflowers have a bronze central disk.

Coneflowers are related to both sunflowers and daisies, and the Green Jewel truly favors a small sunflower when it blooms. Most varieties of coneflowers favor daisies, displaying a single layer of petals. Green Jewel has a double row of petals radiating outward horizontally from the central cone. The fullness of its petal spread truly makes it look like a miniature, green sunflower. The extra layer of petals eliminates petal gapping and gives the flower head a very full appearance. Its central cone also remains a rich green shade throughout the flower’s lifespan. All parts of the plant are edible, and the coneflower is thought to have medicinal benefits. The Green Jewel is a cheerful addition to a medicinal or herb garden, a wildflower garden, or in any bed or border.

The Green Jewel is extremely low maintenance and versatile. It is a cold hardy plant that enjoys basking in full sun. It is disease, pest, and deer resistant, and it thrives in zones 3 – 9. It tolerates any type of well-drained soil, and it has low to moderate water needs and is drought tolerant. In warmer climates, mulching and some afternoon shade will help keep these flowers looking their best. In cooler climates, a layer of mulch will help protect the root system in the winter. These flowers bloom continually, typically from midsummer until the first frost. Trimming back spent flowers will promote new growth throughout the season, but leaving the final flowers on the plant creates winter interest and draws varieties of songbirds, who enjoy the central cone’s seeds. This cheerful perennial with brighten any landscape and provides lively color and interest all year.
