Height and Width

This fern usually grows to a modest height of 20-24 inches, with a spread of from 28-30 inches, making it a great option for borders, containers, or woodland gardens.

For optimal growth, select a location with some shade and soil that drains well when planting your 'Crested Surf'. Make sure to plant it at the same level it was growing in its container, ensuring the crown sits just above the soil surface. Ensure there is enough space between each plant, approximately 12-18 inches, to promote proper air circulation.

Watering

Make sure to maintain the soil's moisture without overwatering. Make sure to water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, particularly in the hot summer months. To prevent fungal diseases, it's best to refrain from watering from above. Use our MOISTURE MAXX non-ionic wetting agent all year or during times of drought for extended help keeping your plants well hydrated for up to 40 days.

Mulching

Applying a layer of organic mulch, like shredded bark or compost, around the plant's base can help retain soil moisture and prevent weed growth. Remember to create some space between the mulch and the fern's crown to avoid rot.

Pruning

'Crested Surf' needs very little pruning, just to get rid of any dead or damaged fronds. Prune away old fronds in late winter or early spring to promote new growth.

Fetility

For optimal growth, make sure to fertilize your fern with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at the start of spring when new growth is starting to appear. For those who love gardening, consider adding compost or organic matter to the soil each year to ensure it gets the nutrients it needs.
