2012 Award of Garden Merit from England's Royal Horticulture Society, ‘Brilliance’ Autumn Fern is a color improvement over the species, Dryopteris erythrosora. The fronds of ‘Brilliance’ are tinged with rich red and orange as the new fronds emerge in the spring. As the warmer temperatures of summer approach, ‘Brilliance’ takes on a deep glossy green.

Autumn Fern handles average to damp moisture, but very dry and very wet conditions should be avoided, as good drainage is necessary. Deer and rabbits stay away from ferns, so use them with confidence near wildlife. Create pathways leading through fern-filled shade beds in a woodland garden. They make a low evergreen foundation planting under the lowest of windowsills. In the coldest zones, it may be necessary to clip some fronds damaged in winter to the ground before new growth emerges in the spring. Do not remove all the fronds, this could make the plant one sided when new growth returns in the spring.
