Cinnamon Fern Osmunda cinnamomea
THE NUMBER TWO COLD HARDY LADSCAPE FERN USED....
General Information:
Osmunda cinnamomea, also known as cinnamon fern, is the ideal plant for that moist area of your yard where little else will grow. This plant, which is indigenous to American wetlands, grows well in woodland gardens and by streams, ponds, and bogs. This plant should be growing next to any water feature you have in your yard. Versatile and lush upright greenery throughout the growing season.
The fibers found close to the base and the new fronds' cinnamon hue are what give this plant its name. These lovely fibers may have previously been used to create orchid pots. Although these ferns don't bloom or flower, they are not required to. Even just their emerald green fronds, which guard your garden like sentinels, make a bold statement.
Cinnamon Ferns thrive almost anywhere and even flourish in containers, bringing lushness and peace to your patio or porch. Mixed planters are given low screening, lush greenery, and window boxes and porch pots as upright filler and tall green backdrop. Use in Rain Gardens, around water features, and at the soggy area where the gutters drain.
Appearance:
- Leaf Color: Deep green, with a glossy finish.
- Bloom Color: The "cinnamon" in its common name refers not to its leaf color, but to the unique brown, cinnamon-colored fertile fronds that rise from its center.
- Height: Typically grows to a height of 2-3 feet but can occasionally reach up to 5 feet under ideal conditions.
- Width: Spreads out to a width of 2-4 feet, depending on its age and growing conditions.
These ferns have a unique growth pattern, with sterile fronds arching outward, creating a fountain-like appearance, while the fertile fronds stand more erect in the center.
General Care for Osmunda cinnamonea "Cinnamon Fern"
-
Planting Tips:
- Choose a location with partial to full shade. While Cinnamon Fern can tolerate some sunlight, too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
- The soil should be well-draining but consistently moist. A mixture of loam, sand, and organic compost works well.
- Plant the fern with the crown just above the soil surface to prevent rot.
-
Watering:
- Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Water the fern deeply once or twice a week, depending on weather conditions.
-
Include Moisture Maxx, non-ionic wetting agent to your routine care. Moisture Maxx can help keep the soil on your new plant or tree moist up to 40 days per treatment. Click here for more information and purchases - Moisture Maxx
- Reduce watering in the winter when the fern is dormant.
-
Mulching:
- Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch (like shredded bark or leaf mold) around the base of the fern to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition.
-
Pruning:
- Generally, Cinnamon Ferns require minimal pruning. However, you can remove dead or yellowing fronds to maintain its appearance and ensure the plant's overall health.
- In the late winter or early spring, before the new growth starts, cut back the old fronds to ground level.
-
Fertilizing:
- While Cinnamon Ferns are not heavy feeders, an annual application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring can promote lush growth.
- Alternatively, enriching the soil with well-decomposed compost can also provide the necessary nutrients.
-
Use a slow release fertilizer for all your fertilizing needs. SR-18-5-10 can last up to 9-10 months on constant feeding, depending on your growing zone and weather conditions. We use SR-18-5-10 every day in our nursery production to keep our plant happy and healthy.
