“Silver Feather” Maiden Grass is an ornamental grass with deep green, silver-striped leaves that catch the sun as its elegant leaves dance in the wind. It is silvery-green all summer and changes to a fountain of gold and orange hues in the fall. This cascading grass stands upright in a mound and spills downward towards the top of the leaves. Silver Feather grows silver-white, silky tassels that turn into feathery, silver-cream plumes in the fall as they open. These tall plumes are magnificent as they shimmer in the sunlight.
“Silver Feather” Maiden Grass grows up to 6-8 feet tall and spreads up to 4-5 feet in width. This tall grass variety is perfect for privacy, as a wind block, or as a natural screen for unattractive yard items, like big electrical boxes. It is helpful in controlling erosion and attracts birds, who love eating its seeds and nesting in its shade. Its cascading, silvery-green leaves love basking in full sun. It grows in zones 4-9 and is one of the most cold-hardy maiden grass varieties.
It is an easy to grow plant that adapts well to most soil types and is even salt resistant. It is draught tolerant and deer, pest, and disease resistant. It grows quickly and is perennial. It can be left untrimmed through the winter to create continued interest and movement in the garden all year. Trimming it back to a few inches above the ground and cleaning any debris in the mound in the late winter or early spring will allow this grass to renew for continued enjoyment year after year.
