Dwarf Gardenia | Gardenia jasminoides 'Radican'
The Dwarf Gardenia Radicans, a miniature version of the classic Gardenia, entices you with a strong, sweet fragrance that beckons you outside to enjoy the summer. It grows only about 1 – 3 feet tall and 3 – 4 feet wide, making it a great small addition to beds and borders. It is the perfect height to plant below a window to enjoy its fragrance throughout the house. Beginning in late spring and continuing to late summer, petite white flowers with semidouble petals bloom, covering the shrub. With small, glossy leaves that are pointed and leathery like a Magnolia, this evergreen shrub adds interest to the garden all year. Its dark green leaves are a beautiful backdrop to its elegant white blooms. Butterflies, bees, and other pollinators are drawn to these fragrant blooms, so this plant will bring life to the garden.
Dwarf Gardenia Radicans is part of the Rubiaceae family, the same family as coffee. It is native to tropical and subtropical habitats, including China, Japan, and Taiwan. English naturalist John Ellis discovered the Gardenia in 1761 and chose to name it after Scottish naturalist Alexander Garden. Many cultivars, including the Dwarf Gardenia Radicans, have been created from this fragrant, tropical shrub. Dwarf Gardenia Radicans is slow growing and toxic to people and pets. It causes stomach upset and vomiting, so it should not be ingested. This character trait is a natural protection against damage from herbivores, such as deer.
Dwarf Gardenia Radicans grows in zones 7 – 11, but its compact nature makes it perfect for container planting, so it can be enjoyed in cooler climates as well and placed indoors or in a greenhouse each winter. It is resistant to pests and diseases. It enjoys full to partial sun and acidic, well-drained, slightly moist soil. It has average to high water needs. A quick way to know if it has adequate water is to press two inches into the soil feeling for dampness. Mulch can help reduce it water needs as well. It can be pruned after it flowers and fed an acid-rich fertilizer in May and June to promote growth and blooms. Dwarf Gardenia Radicans will sweep you off your feet with their beauty but even more so with their strong, sweet fragrance that is both unique and memorable. Planted in beds, borders, or containers, these dark, glossy shrubs with petite, elegant flowers will beckon in summer and beckon you to your porch to enjoy them.
