Gardenia jasminoides 'Kelims Hardy' is a popular cultivar of the Gardenia jasminoides species, commonly known as hardy gardenia. Renowned for its beautiful and fragrant white flowers, this particular variety is highly valued for its ability to withstand cooler temperatures compared to other gardenia cultivars. In this guide, we will explore the characteristics, cultivation requirements, and care tips for Gardenia jasminoides 'Kelims Hardy.' Gardenia jasminoides 'Kelims Hardy' is an evergreen shrub that typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet (60 to 120 cm) with a similar spread. It features glossy, dark green leaves that provide an attractive backdrop for its pristine white, pinwheel-shaped flowers. The blooms emit a captivating fragrance, reminiscent of jasmine, filling the surrounding area with a delightful scent.

  1. Hardiness: One of the key attributes of Gardenia jasminoides 'Kelims Hardy' is its ability to tolerate lower temperatures compared to other gardenia varieties. It is generally classified as hardy in USDA hardiness zones 7 to 11. With proper protection, it can withstand temperatures as low as 10°F (-12°C) without significant damage.

  2. Planting:

  • Select a location that receives partial shade to full sun, preferably with morning sun and afternoon shade.
  • Ensure the soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter.
  • Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower than its depth.
  • Place the plant in the hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm it around the roots.
  • Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.
  1. Care and Maintenance:
  • Watering: Gardenia jasminoides 'Kelims Hardy' prefers consistently moist soil. Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. Follow the package instructions for dosage.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as pine bark or wood chips, around the base of the plant to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
  • Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering to shape the plant and remove any dead or diseased branches. Avoid heavy pruning as it may reduce flower production.
  • Winter Protection: In colder regions, protect the plant from freezing temperatures by covering it with a frost cloth or relocating it to a sheltered area. Potted specimens can be moved indoors during winter.
  1. Pests and Diseases: Gardenia jasminoides 'Kelims Hardy' can be susceptible to common gardenia pests and diseases, including aphids, whiteflies, scale insects, and root rot. Regularly inspect the plant for any signs of infestation or disease and take appropriate measures, such as applying insecticidal soap or using organic pest control methods.

  2. Propagation:

  • Gardenia jasminoides 'Kelims Hardy' can be propagated through stem cuttings or layering.
  • Take 4- to 6-inch (10-15 cm) semi-ripe cuttings from the current year's growth in summer.
  • Remove the lower leaves, dip the cut end in rooting hormone, and plant the cutting in a well-draining potting mix.
  • Keep the cutting in a warm and humid environment, providing bottom heat if possible.
  • Once rooted, transplant the cutting into a larger container or into the garden.
