Porcupine Grass |Miscanthus sinensis Strictus'

“Porcupine” Maiden Grass is a tall, thin-leafed, ornamental grass boasting a distinctive coloring reminiscent of a porcupine’s quills. It has a deep green leaf with banded bars of creamy yellow throughout. It grows in arching clumps of 3 - 4 feet wide and 6 - 8 feet tall. This distinctive grass variety will add intrigue and color to any garden or border and is tall enough to be a wonderful natural privacy wall. It has the appearance of a resting porcupine, with its arching leaves spreading in all directions from the center mound. It also stands straighter than other maiden grasses, creating a column effect around the base of the grass below the arching tops of the leaves. In the fall, its cascading leaves transform into a rich orange with creamy bands. In late summer, this ornamental grass develops cream-colored seed heads that sit high above its leaves and open into a bronze plume in the fall. These plumes create movement in the garden as they bounce and sway in the breeze.

“Porcupine” is a low maintenance, perennial, fast-growing grass. For the strongest leaf and stem structure, it prefers full sun. It grows in zones 4-10 and does well in most soil types. It grows exceedingly well in well-drained soil, making it ideal in a rock garden or in the outer perimeter of the lawn that may not get as much water. It is draught tolerant and deer, pest, and disease resistant. It even does well with salt spray and heat as well, making it ideal for coastal regions. It only needs to be trimmed back and the mound cleaned in early spring, making this an easy grass to care for. Because of its height, tying the grass in a bundle can help hold it for clipping. This unique grass is a conversation piece and adds whimsical charm all year with its interesting color and variegation.
