Oakland® Holly - A Reliable Evergreen for Continuous Charm Throughout the Seasons

Oakland® Holly stands out as a remarkable evergreen shrub from the Southern Living Plant Collection. Its striking foliage and naturally pyramidal shape make it an ideal selection for enhancing landscapes. This holly flourishes in USDA zones 6-9, adapting beautifully to various climates and offering delightful year-round appeal with its shiny, rich green foliage. In contrast to the usual holly types, its leaves boast a remarkable oak-like form, bringing a special texture to any environment. In the springtime, it brings forth delicate white blooms that, though modest in appearance, play a vital role in nurturing pollinators like bees. These lovely blooms eventually transform into vibrant red berries, adding to its decorative charm and drawing in our feathered friends. Well-grown Oakland® Holly plants can achieve a remarkable height of 12-20 feet and a spread of 8-15 feet, making them a superb option for privacy screens, hedges, foundation plantings, or as a standout specimen in your garden. This variety boasts impressive deer resistance, making it a dependable option in regions where browsing is a concern. Yet, it's important to note that holly berries are not safe for pets, as they can be toxic if consumed.

For optimal growth, ensure you plant Oakland® Holly in soil that drains well, providing it with full sun to partial shade for the best outcome. Prepare a hole that is twice the width of the root ball, but keep it at the same depth to maintain stability. Give your plants a good soak right after planting and keep a steady watering routine, particularly in that crucial first year. A layer of mulch, about 2 to 3 inches thick, works wonders in keeping moisture in and balancing the soil temperature. Pruning is kept to a minimum thanks to its naturally neat form, yet some shaping can be carried out in late winter if one wishes. In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer designed for hollies or evergreens to promote vibrant, healthy growth. With its easy care and remarkable flexibility, Oakland® Holly makes a wonderful enhancement to any garden.
