Little Quick Fire Hydrangea |Hydrangea paniculata 'SMHPLQF' Little Quick Fire
Little Quick Fire hydrangea is a dwarf variety of the Quick Fire. This compact shrub grows 3 – 5 feet tall and wide and is covered in stunning blooms most of the year. Little Quick Fire is an early bloomer, blooming about a month before other varieties of hydrangea. Is has tall, cone-shaped blooms that are loose clusters or panicles of small flowers. This loose group makes it easy to see the small, individual flowers and gives each panicle a lacy look. These flowers bloom in bunches at the end of many of the stems, covering the shrub in beautiful blooms.
Little Quick Fire's flowers are long lasting, blooming in the summer as a bright, lime green color that quickly shifts to a creamy white and transforms into a bold reddish pink as the blooms mature. Its wide, green leaves have a serrated pattern along their edges and are soft to the touch, and they turn golden yellow in the fall. Little Quick Fire is a great size for any garden, hedge, understory, or container. It can also be trained into a small tree or topiary as well but performs best as a shrub.
Little Quick Fire hydrangea is a medium-growing, low maintenance shrub, needing moderate water. It tolerates most soil types but prefers well drained soil. Panicle hydrangeas are the easiest to care for, making Little Quick Fire a great choice for beginner gardeners or for anyone who wants a shrub that provides great curb appeal with minimal effort.
This compact shrub is a great choice because it does not outgrow its space like larger shrubs. It does best in full sun or partial sun, preferring full sun in cooler temperatures and partial sun in the Southern states. It is a very cold hardy shrub, withstanding winter temperatures as low as -40°. It grows in zones 3 – 8 and is resilient against drought, cold, salt, and air pollution.
Little Quick Fire is a small but dazzling addition to any garden. It is easy to care for, with minimal pruning needs. It blooms on new growth, so pruning should be done in early spring. Its blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to the garden, and they are beautiful as part of a fresh or dried flower arrangement. Leaving dried flowers on the stems through the winter adds beauty and interest to a winter garden as well. With one of the longest lasting bloom times of any shrub, the Little Quick Fire’s vibrant blooms are sure to please all year.
