Grin and Tonic™ Hydrangea | Hydrangea m. ‘HOKOMAGRITO' UPSSAF, CPBRAF Grin and Tonic ™

If you love Hydrangea Limelight™ blooms but have too much shade, you know it is not the plant for you. Now, the 'Bloomin Easy' brand breeder has just what the doctor ordered, or bar tender! The Grin and Tonic™ Hydrangea will get you there! Large lime-green mophead blooms cover this compact grower from spring through fall depending on your growing zone. A re-bloomer as well, you can enjoy this giver for at least 2 of the 4 seasons a year. Deep green foliage and good leaf texture gives the best backdrop for the white flowers. You will have trouble deciding what to do with this new introduction, whether to plant in the ground or show it off on your deck or patio.

Leaf Color:

The Grin and Tonic™ Hydrangea boasts lush, glossy green foliage that serves as the perfect backdrop for its vibrant lime green blooms. The leaves are not only ornamental but also provide a stunning contrast to the colorful flowers, creating a visually appealing display throughout the growing season.

Bloom Color:

One of the most enchanting features of the Grin and Tonic™ Hydrangea is its captivating bloom color. The large, rounded flower heads showcase a delightful combination of shades, ranging from lime green fading to white. The flower clusters change from tan to caramel after the first frost, and the mature plants' peeling papery brown bark shows the cinnamon color of the stems and branches. The combination of these textures makes for a beautiful winter garden, especially against a snowy backdrop. Bees can also make their homes in the hollow stems. This dynamic color palette evolves throughout the blooming period, ensuring a constantly changing and mesmerizing landscape in your garden.

Height and Width:

The Grin and Tonic™ Hydrangea cultivar is a compact yet robust shrub, reaching a height of approximately 3 to 4 feet with a similar spread. Its well-behaved growth habit makes it an excellent choice for various garden settings, from borders and beds to containers and mixed plantings.

Planting Tips:

When planting your Grin and Tonic™ Hydrangea, choose a location with well-draining soil and partial to full sunlight. Ensure that the planting hole is large enough to accommodate the root ball, and be sure to water thoroughly after planting. Proper spacing is essential to allow for adequate air circulation and prevent overcrowding as the plant matures.

Watering:

Adequate and consistent watering is crucial for the health of your Grin and Tonic™ Hydrangea. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. During hot and dry periods, be vigilant about providing extra water to prevent dehydration. A layer of organic mulch around the base of the shrub can help retain soil moisture.

Mulching:

Mulching is beneficial for conserving soil moisture, regulating temperature, and suppressing weeds. Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or compost, around the base of the plant, leaving a few inches of space around the stem to prevent rot. Include Moister Maxx non-ionic wetting agent to reduce stress and enhance water absorption in the soil.

Pruning:

Pruning is generally minimal for the Grin and Tonic™ Hydrangea. Remove any dead or damaged wood in late winter or early spring. If desired, you can shape the shrub to maintain its compact form. However, avoid heavy pruning, as this may reduce the number of blooms.

Fertilizing:

Feed your Grin and Tonic™ Hydrangea in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Use what we use, SR-18-5-10 slow release fertilizer. This will provide the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and prolific blooming. Follow the recommended dosage on the fertilizer package, and avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.

Purchase our Slow Release fertilizer here SR-18-5-10.
