Endless Summer® Summer Crush® Bigleaf Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailmacfive' PP 30,359
Planting Tips:
Location:
Opt for a spot that receives varying degrees of sunlight, from partial shade to full sun. These Hydrangeas are perfect for gardeners of all ages. They love a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, although they can handle full sun in cooler climates.
Soil: It is recommended to plant in soil that drains well and contains plenty of organic matter. The optimal soil pH levels vary depending on the preferred bloom color, ranging from slightly acidic to neutral.
Plant spacing is crucial for the healthy growth of your plants. It is recommended to leave a distance of 3 to 4 feet between each plant. This will allow them to fully spread out and promote proper air circulation, which is essential for their well-being.
Watering:
It is important to water your plants consistently, especially when there is a lack of rainfall. Ensure that the soil remains consistently moist without becoming overly saturated. It is highly advised to implement deep watering techniques in order to promote robust root growth. Select a soaker hose or drip irrigation system to reduce water contact with the leaves and avoid any potential fungal problems.
Let's talk about mulching:
Mulching:
Apply a layer of organic mulch, like wood chips or pine needles, around the base of the plant. This will help provide the necessary nutrients and moisture for optimal growth.
Benefits: Mulching is a great way to maintain soil moisture, prevent weed growth, and regulate the temperature of the soil. Make sure to keep the mulch away from the plant's base to prevent any potential rot.
Pruning techniques:
Pruning:
It is recommended to prune in late winter or early spring, just before new growth starts. Proper pruning techniques can be used to shape the plant and eliminate any stems that are dead or damaged.
Procedure: Eliminate any aged, exhausted blossoms and prune approximately one-third of the plant's more mature stems to stimulate fresh development and enhance flowering.
Fertilizing:
Consider using a well-balanced, slow-release fertilizer like what we use, SR-18-5-10 specifically designed for hydrangeas or other flowering shrubs. Apply fertilizer during the early spring when new growth emerges and once more during mid-summer to encourage ongoing blooming. Be cautious about using too much fertilizer, as it may cause an abundance of leaves but fewer flowers.
