Stokes Dwarf Yaupon is a compact, woody shrub with glossy, dark olive-green leaves. This holly grows 2 – 3 feet tall and 3 – 4 feet wide with dense, neat branches, giving it a tidy form without the need for pruning. It does not have the sharp, spiney leaf structure holly is typically known for. Instead, it somewhat favors a boxwood in appearance. It can be shaped as desired and makes a great topiary, but it forms a low, rounded, symmetrical shrub naturally. It is great as a border or hedge or a cover shrub in front of tall, leggy plants.
Stokes Dwarf Yaupon is an evergreen shrub that is a beautiful garden feature all year. Each spring, it produces tiny, white, sweet-scented flowers. Although most plants self-pollinate, most holly varieties contain only male or female flowers. Stokes Dwarf Yaupon is a male variety. Although this variety does not produce berries like its female counterparts, having a male holly in the garden ensures that female holly varieties produce the showy berries that holly is renowned for.
Stokes Dwarf Yaupon is native to the southeastern part of the United States. Although it grows at a slow pace, it is very low maintenance and grows best in full sun or partial sun. It grows in zones 7 – 10 and attracts bees and other pollinators. It is tolerant of most soil types and resists deer, pests, and diseases. It tolerates both drought and flooding. It is also salt tolerant, being a gulf coast native. This tough little shrub is a great addition to any garden, creating rich evergreen backdrop that unifies various elements of the garden.
