Saucer magnolias were first cultivated in the mid 1800s and have been enjoying a special place in the spring landscape ever since. This is a mid-sized shade tree that grows between 20-30 feet tall, 25 feet wide. It has a beautiful rounded shape, and as it grows taller a savvy gardener will remove lower branches until it becomes a perfect shady place to place a garden bench. Best of all, hundreds of pale pink outside, white inside tulip-shaped flowers cover the tree in very early spring just before the large dark green leaves begin to emerge.

Saucer Magnolia grows one to two feet a year and bloom best in full sun. Not fussy at all about soil, it will grow in acid, sandy, clay, or loam soils. It just asks for even moisture. Pair Saucer Magnolia with other early spring bloomers, like coneflowers, spring bulbs, and forsythia, to start the season off with a blast of color.
