Single Red Knockout Rose | Rosa 'Radrazz’

Single Red Knockout Rose is an easy to grow, low maintenance shrub that is perfect for all gardens. It grows in zones 4-9, is resistant to black spotty mold, and handles heat and humidity. A long bloomer, Single Red Knockout rose produces 3 ½ inch cherry red flowers that bloom in clusters from spring to the first frost. It has open single blooms that attract pollinators all season.  The plant grows 3-4 feet tall and wide, which makes it an excellent choice for a hedge row or as an accent plant. It has a mild tea rose fragrance and is a favorite of butterflies. Single Red Knockout Rose is a versatile repeat flowering plant that will add color and elegance to the landscape.

Care

Single Red Knockout Rose is excellent in full sun as well as partial shade, needing only 3-4 hours of full sun each day. It thrives in moist but well drained, acidic soils and has average water needs. It is best to water in the mornings and to avoid overhead watering. When planting, dig a hole the same size as the container the plant came in and twice as wide. Be sure to loosen the root ball and backfill with soil. Water early on to help the plant establish, watering at the base of the plant.

Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer in early spring to promote growth and discontinue by late summer to help the plant go dormant. Add a layer of mulch, 2-3 inches thick at the base of the plant, ensuring not to touch the base of the plant directly. This will insulate the roots and keep them from drying out.

Prune in late winter or early spring by ⅓  to promote new growth. Good air circulation will help protect against disease, so prune as needed to remove dead or faded blooms and damaged foliage.

Uses in the Landscape

Single Red Knockout Rose is low maintenance and easy to grow. It has improved disease resistance especially to black spot leaf disease. It grows in zones 5-9 and is a great shrub for handling southern weather. It is compact, making it great for growing in mass, in containers, or used as hedges.

It is great for accents around borders, along walkways or to add curb appeal under windows. It attracts butterflies and other pollinators all season. With beautiful single blooms, it is an excellent choice to add as cut flowers. It is nontoxic and in the fall will fade to orange red rose hips that are delicious when added to tea.
