Location:
Make sure your Red Hot Poker Kniphofia 'Backdraft' gets at least six hours of direct sunlight every day by placing it in a spot that gets full sun to partial shade. Although it does best in slightly damp but not overly wet soil, this plant will still thrive in soil that drains well. To make sure there's enough room for growth and air circulation, plant multiple specimens about 18 to 24 inches apart.
Water Needs:
Once established, 'Backdraft' can withstand periods of drought rather well; however, it is still important to water it regularly, particularly during dry spells. Water thoroughly but seldom, giving the soil a little space to dry out in between. To keep fungal diseases at bay, water the plant from the ground up rather than the top, as this will allow water to reach the roots more efficiently.
Use our MOISTURE MAXX non-ionic wetting agent all year or during times of drought for extended help keeping your plants well hydrated for up to 40 days.
Mulching:
To keep the soil around your Red Hot Poker from drying out, weedy, and too hot or too cold, cover the soil with an organic mulch. Mulching is best accomplished with organic materials like compost, pine straw, shredded bark, or similar materials. To avoid rotting, make sure the mulch doesn't get on the plant's stems or crown.
Pruning/Deadheading:
Deadheading spent flower spikes keeps the plant looking good and encourages continuous blooming. To keep your plants looking healthy and beautiful all year round, be sure to remove any leaves that are damaged or discolored as you see fit. If you want to revitalise your plant and encourage new growth, prune it back to ground level in the late fall or early spring.
Fertilizing:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer SR-18-5-10 slow release fertilizer to your Red Hot Poker Kniphofia 'Backdraft' plant in the early spring, when new growth begins to appear, and water thoroughly. Another option is to manually fertilize the plant by spreading a layer of compost around its base. Be careful not to fertilize your plants too heavily, as it might cause them to produce more foliage than flowers.
Purchase our Slow Release fertilizer here SR-18-5-10.
