General Care

Planting Tips

Choose a location with well-draining soil and full sun to part shade. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth as it was in the container. Space multiple plants approximately 2 to 3 feet apart for optimal growth.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, 'Niagara Falls' Switch Grass is drought-tolerant and only requires occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Use our MOISTURE MAXX non-ionic wetting agent all year or during times of drought for extended help keeping your plants well hydrated for up to 40 days.

Mulching

Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or compost, around the base of the plant to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Pruning

In late winter to early spring, cut back the previous year's growth to a few inches above the ground to encourage fresh, vigorous growth. This rejuvenation pruning helps maintain the plant's shape and prevents it from becoming too leggy.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced fertilizer SR-18-5-10 slow release fertilizer in early spring, just as new growth begins to emerge. Avoid over-fertilization, as excessive nutrients can lead to floppy growth and reduced flowering.

Purchase our Slow Release fertilizer here SR-18-5-10.
