General Care:

Planting Tips:

For optimal growth of Pink Muhly Grass, it is important to select a spot that has well-draining soil and receives plenty of sunlight. Prepare the soil by digging a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball. Carefully place the plant into the hole and gently fill it with soil. Make sure to water your plants thoroughly after planting to ensure strong root development.

Watering:

It is crucial to ensure regular watering during the initial growing season to encourage strong root development, even though Pink Muhly Grass is known for its ability to withstand drought once it has taken root. After the plants have taken root, it's best to water them deeply but not too often. Give the soil a chance to dry out before watering again.

Mulching:

Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant can be quite beneficial. It helps to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature, creating a more favorable environment for your plants. Ensure that the mulch is not in direct contact with the stems to avoid any potential rotting.

Pruning:

During the transition from winter to spring, it is beneficial to trim back the growth from the previous year. This will promote the emergence of new and vibrant growth. Make sure to use clean, sharp pruners when removing any dead or damaged foliage.

Fertilizing:

When it comes to fertilizing, Pink Muhly Grass is quite undemanding and usually doesn't need much in terms of heavy fertilization. However, applying a balanced, SR-18-5-10 slow-release fertilizer in early spring can provide the necessary nutrients for optimal growth.

Uses in the Landscape

Pink Muhly Grass is a very low maintenance perennial that grows best in full sun and in just about any well drained soil, preferring drier soils. It grows in zones 6 – 9 and is tolerant of drought, heat, salt, and pollution, making it a very versatile and easy to care for plant. It also resists deer, pests, and diseases.

Use as a border plant around perennial gardens or around the edge of a patio. Plant in mass as a filler plant in larger landscapes.  With its bright green, spiky foliage and cotton candy cloud plumage, Pink Muhly Grass grows quickly once established and is a showstopper in any garden.

Companion Plants
