Nelly Moser Clematis |Clematis 'Nelly Moser’
With its big, vibrant blooms, the Nelly Moser Clematis is a great choice as a flowering vine. It reaches 8 to 12 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide with 8 inch flowers. Unlike many other flowering plants, Nelly Moser is a perfect choice for a shady or partial sun area, as full sun can fade its gorgeous flowers. It is great tucked into a garden or behind other plants as a backdrop plant.
Awarded Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, Nelly Moser has large soft pink flowers with a bright rosy pink bar down the center of each petal. The petals are open and overlapping. The anthers are in a group in the center of the flower and are cream at the bottom and chocolate or maroon at the tips. It blooms in the late spring to early summer and again in early fall. Allow this vine to cover anything from a fence to a pergola to an entryway. Add a trellis, lattice, or wire to the back of an entertainment area for a living wall of these bright, beautiful clematis.
Care
There are a multitude of possibilities with Nelly Moser, but it will require some framework to give it stability to grow on. Keep its roots cool by providing it with cover like pebbles, mulch or a ground cover plant, such as Chocolate Chip Ajuga.
Nelly Moser needs well drained but moist soil to grow in. Allow 2 to 3 feet in space to grow, especially if you are planting multiple Clematis. When planting your Nelly Moser, dig the hole 2 to 3 times larger than the root ball. Plant the top of the root ball 4 inches below the soil level and to backfill and water thoroughly.
Early spring is a great time to mulch and fertilize, as this will help maintain moisture and feed the roots. When adding fertilizer and mulch be sure not to touch the leaves of the Clematis. Nelly Moser Clematis is a member of Pruning Group 2 and needs a light pruning twice a year. Late winter or early spring is the best time to prune dead or injured stems slightly above the new buds. Stems 4 years or older can be removed as well to encourage new growth and keep the Clematis healthy.
Nelly Moser grows on both new and old wood and blooms twice, once in early summer and again in early fall. Give it a slight trim in late winter or early spring to shape it; remove 6 to 8 inches back to a strong set of buds. After the first flush of flowers fade, prune up to 1/3 of the plant back to a node in order to cut away any feeble growth. To boost growth, a small amount of fertilizer can be added. Dead or damaged stems can be removed anytime.
Uses in the Landscape
Nelly Moser grows in zones 4 - 9, bursting with large star-shaped blooms each summer. It reaches up to 10 feet tall and has a sweet vanilla scent. It is deer and rabbit resistant and grows at a medium rate.
It is one of the few varieties of clematis that performs better in partial sun, as too much sun will fade its rich pink blooms, so this variety is perfect to tuck into spots receiving dappled sun, like near the canopy of a tree, on a partially shaded wall where other clematis may struggle, or on a covered balcony or back wall of an entertainment area. It is very easy to grow, and its bright pink flowers and sweet scent brighten the landscape every summer.
Companion Plants
Clematis is beautiful paired with any tree, shrub, or perennial. The splashes of whites and pinks of the Nelly Moser and Autumn Twist Bicolor Azalea pair well together, making it look like someone hand painted all the flowers on both plants. Autumn Twist is fragrance-free, blooms through three seasons of the year, and its evergreen leaves turn purple each winter, making the azalea a great choice as a year-round interest.
Amazing Daisies are a cheery pop of white that pairs well with the white and pink blend in the Nelly Moser. Both plants bloom throughout the summer and into the early fall, and the small white flowers will create a variety to the large star-shaped Nelly Moser flowers. Both are also classics in a traditional or cottage garden but work great anywhere.
Another great way to complement Clematis is to add additional climbers to the mix. Purple Wisteria Vine is an awesome match with Nelly Moser Clematis highlighting its brilliant pink color and adding a royal purple hue. It has similar care needs, needing moist well drained soil and is an excellent attractor of pollinators. It prefers full sun and is deer resistant. Both make great coverings for trellises and fences while adding splashes of color for your enjoyment.
