Little Spire Russian Sage | Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Little Spire'

Little Spire Russian Sage is a small, compact deciduous plant that offers a long blooming season from mid summer until the fall. It grows 24-28 inches tall and 15-28 inches wide and is perfect for small spaces or planting in mass. Little Spire Russian Sage offers stunning hues of blue and lavender, with its small blooms that grow on white stems and fragrant gray-green leaves. Little Spire Russian Sage is an excellent attractor of pollinators and, despite its dainty appearance, is very hardy.

Care

LIttle Spire Russian Sage is widely adaptable to many soil types. It grows best in moist, well drained soil and thrives in areas of full sun. It has low moisture needs and only requires moderate watering. Fertilize early with a balanced slow release fertilizer. A layer of mulch can be placed around the plant to help maintain moisture in the roots and to protect against weeds.

Prune the Little Spire Russian Sage back to the ground in late winter or early spring once new growth is detected. When planting, dig a hole the same depth as the container the plant came in and twice as wide. Backfill and water after planting.

Uses in the Landscape

Little Spire Russian Sage is perfect for small gardens or planting in mass to cover up sparse areas. It is a great choice for desert landscapes or cottage gardens. Little Spire Russian Sage also works well in Mediterranean gardens. This gorgeous, small shrub attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and is deer and pest resistant. It is  relatively disease resistant and requires very little maintenance. It grows in zones 5-10 and is a hardy and versatile specimen.

Companion Plants

Grosso English Lavender is an excellent companion for LIttle Spire Russian Sage. Pair these together for their similar colors and beauty. They both are excellent plants for attracting pollinators and offer welcoming fragrances. Plant them in containers and place them around porches and patios for enjoyment all summer long.

Stella De Oro Daylily offers brilliant yellow blooms that pair perfectly with the violet flowers of LIttle Spire Russian Sage. Plant them together in the landscape to offer contrast in color and texture.

Green Twister Coneflower pairs well with LIttle Spire Russian Sage, with its contrasting greenish pink flowers. It offers height and a difference of shape while maintaining beauty and interest. Plant them together in mass or in containers to create interest and excitement all season.
