Henryi Clematis | Clematis 'Henryi'
Clematis Henryi is a climbing vine that boasts 8 inch pure white blooms with ruffled edges and cream and coffee anthers blooming in the center of each flower. These spectacular blooms are a dramatic pairing with Henryi's dark green foliage. Winner of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, Henryi is eye-catching and pairs well with any color scheme.
Henryi blooms from June to September, covering in large, crisp white flowers all through the summer. It reaches 10 to 12 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide and is perfect growing on any garden structure. It can grow on a trellis or wall in the landscape, or it can sprawl across the ground as a natural and ornamental groundcover. It also makes a great cover vine to help mask utility boxes or other maintenance items in the landscape.
Care
Henryi Clematis needs a structure for its vines to cling to as it climbs. It will only wrap around objects up to about 3/4 of an inch, so it will need wire if growing up smooth objects. It also needs cool roots, so cover it with mulch and plant shrubs or perennials around it. It enjoys full sun across its leaves and blooms.
Clematis thrives in moist, well drained soil. Give each clematis about 2 to 3 feet of space for its roots and vines if you are mass planting or pairing it with anything else. When you plant Henryi, make the hole twice as big as the container, and plant the crown and about 4 inches of its stem underground. Backfill with the same soil and water thoroughly. Water the clematis regularly, especially during dry spells.
Refresh with about 2 inches of mulch, add an all-purpose fertilizer, and prune about 6 - 8 inches from the top of the vine each February. Mulching around the base helps hold some moisture, and fertilizer helps feed the roots. Avoid directly touching the stems of the clematis with fertilizer or mulch. When pruning, look from the top down to trim back above a healthy pair of buds. Remove any dead, weak, or injured sems, and do general cleanup and maintenance, being careful not to remove too many buds, as they become June flowers.
Henryi is part of Pruning Group 2, so it can be pruned twice per year, if desired. Pruning up to 1/3 of the clematis after the first bloom season will refresh the plant, keep it clean, and help it bloom all across the vine. Cut it to a node where the vine branches. A small amount of fertilizer after the second pruning can be added for a growth boost as well. Dead or damaged stems can be removed anytime during the year.
Uses in the Landscape
Henryi Clematis grows up to 12 feet tall, so it is perfect for taller places, like walls and pergolas. Its crisp, white petals pair with anything, and it adds an element of height and fills the summer air with a sweet, vanilla scent. It grows at a medium rate and blooms twice a year: June and September. It is deer and rabbit resistant and easy to grow and care for.
It will climb on any surface that offers an area for it to cling to, or a structure can be added as a support if the surface is smooth. Clematis use very small leaf petiole to cling to objects, so they will not damage living objects, such as trees. These pure summer blooms will add elegance to any area of the landscape.
Companion Plants
Henryi Clematis pairs perfectly with shrubs, trees, perennials, and more. It complements any color, and it adds an element of elegance and splendor to any area. It is one of the taller varieties and has dark green foliage and white blooms, so it would really make a statement growing alongside or on Sky Pencil Holly.
With its burgundy foliage and rich pink blooms, the Spilled Wine Weigela is also a great choice to grow in front of this lovely climbing vine, adding an element of interest. It blooms from spring until the first frost, so it offers a bounty of colorful blooms for months.
Another great choice for color and texture is the All the Buzz Buddleia. This 3-in-1 butterfly bush offers a splash of color with blue, raspberry, and white blooms. It blooms throughout the late summer and fall, flowering until the first frost.
