Choosing Your Encore Azalea

The Encore Azalea is a colorful and versatile evergreen shrub that has transformed the way we use azaleas in landscaping. These shrubs bring vivid blooms to sunny locations in the spring and again in the late summer to fall. They come in a range of sizes and colors, making them a great addition to any garden.

When selecting your Encore Azalea, first determine the size you want the plant to grow. Some Encores grow as large as 5 1/2 feet, while others are dwarf, growing only 2 1/2 feet tall. Next, choose your desired color. The right Encore can integrate into a pink/blue/purple color scheme, and others fit seamlessly into an orange-yellow color palette.

Planting and Care

Encore Azaleas are hardy in zones 6b-10b. Plant them high in well-drained, moderately moist conditions. Prune and fertilize in late spring after the first bloom to give them everything they need to come back strong in summer and fall.

Autumn Bonfire® Red | Rhododendron ‘Robleza' PPAF

Autumn Bonfire Encore Azalea is a dwarf variety with fiery red flowers that bloom in ruffled layers. This shrub grows 2-3 feet tall and wide, making it perfect for container planting or for smaller gardens. It retains its foliage in the winter, which transforms into a rich purple color. This plant has no fragrance, making it ideal for those with allergies.

Planting and Care

Autumn Bonfire grows in zones 6-10 and enjoys full sun to light shade. It prefers well-drained, acidic soil and is drought tolerant once established. Mulch helps reduce water needs by retaining moisture and keeping the roots cool. Pruning should be done after the spring blooms fade to encourage new growth.

Autumn Embers® Red | Rhododendron ‘Conleb’ PP10581

Autumn Embers is a well-branched dwarf variety that grows 2-3 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. It has showy, red-orange flowers that have semi-double blooms. This shrub is evergreen, providing interest even during winter months with its small, elliptical foliage. It blooms from midspring through midfall and has no fragrance, making it perfect for those with allergies.

Planting and Care

Autumn Embers grows in zones 6-10 and enjoys full sun to partial sun. It is low maintenance, tolerating a variety of soils, including clay and sandy soils. It is heat and humidity tolerant and can withstand drought once established. Trimming spent flowers will keep it blooming prolifically throughout the season.

Autumn Lily® White | Rhododendron 'Roblex' PP25073

Autumn Lily is a densely-branched shrub that grows 4-5 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. It has delicate white blooms that cover the shrub multiple times each year. This shrub and its flowers have no fragrance, making it ideal for those with allergies. It is evergreen, transforming from green to rich purple in winter.
