Double Red Knockout Rose is a low maintenance shrub with stunning deep red rounded flowers and purplish green foliage. It is disease and heat resistant once established. It is a long bloomer, with repeat blooms from spring to frost. Its vibrant red double blooms are 3 inches across and produce up to 24 petals.

Double Red Knockout is compact in size growing 3-4 feet high and wide, making it a perfect choice as a feature shrub, mass planting in a border, or low-growing groupings under windows. It attracts pollinators and has a subtle spicy scent. It is non-toxic and produces orange-red hips in the fall that are edible and perfect for tea. Double Red Knockout Rose is a versatile and easy-to-grow choice that fills the garden with vibrant reds all summer.

Care

Double Red Knockout Rose enjoys full to partial sun, needing at least 6-8 hours per day. The more sun it receives, the richer its blooms will be. Plant in moist but well drained soil and water when the top 3 inches of the soil becomes dry. Double Red Knockout Rose grows best in chalky, loam soils with neutral ph levels.

When planting, dig a hole to the same depth and twice as wide as the original container. When planting in groups, space each shrub at least 3 feet apart to allow for root growth. If planting in containers, choose a container twice as large as the original container. If transplanting, the best time is while the plant is dormant in late winter or early spring.

Water consistently and avoid overhead watering. Water deeply at the roots to encourage root development. Add a layer of mulch around the base 2-3 inches thick to keep roots cool and moist.

Double Red Knockout Rose does not require much fertilizing; however, you can use a balanced SR-18-5-10 slow-release fertilizer to give it a boost. When fertilizing, be sure you wait until after the plant has been established, generally after the first flush of blooms. Ensure that the soil is moist before adding fertilizer to not burn up the roots. Avoid fertilizing in later summer to allow the plant to prepare to become dormant. Feed the plant before new growth begins and then again in midseason.

Purchase our Slow Release fertilizer here SR-18-5-10.

Double Red Knockout Rose does not need to be deadheaded after its blooms fade. Prune the shrub in early spring no more than ⅓ of its total size.

Uses in the Landscape

As a compact shrub, Double Red Knockout Rose is perfect for small spaces or used as hedges along walkways. It is great in containers as well. Plant in small beds as the focal plant or use around borders of larger beds. It is an excellent choice to plant in mass or use as a backdrop for other perennials. Plant the shrub along entry ways as an accent to add curb appeal to the landscape. Double Red Knockout Rose is nontoxic, low maintenance and easy to grow. It grows in zones 4-9 is disease and heat resistant and is perfect for attracting butterflies.

Companion Plants

Little Kitten Dwarf Maiden Grass  is a small grass growing only 12-15 inches high making it the perfect complement to fill in front of Double Red Knockout Rose. It is a great choice to use as a living mulch to protect the shrubs' roots keeping them cool. It has silvery-green foliage providing a great contrast to the deep red blooms of Double Red Knockout Rose.

August Beauty Gardenia is a beautiful creamy white shrub that offers a contrast  of color and style. This shrub grows 4-6 feet tall offering some height without overpowering the Rose and is great at attracting pollinators. It enjoys similar growing conditions as Double Red Knockout Rose making it easy to incorporate into the same landscape.
