Crystal Fountain Clematis| Clematis 'Evipo 038'

Crystal Fountain Clematis is a climbing vine boasting vibrant violet semi-double blooms. The flowers are 4 to 5 inches across with a wide, open layer of 8 violet petals. This open layer of petals is topped with a bursting fountain of thin lavender petals with a lime green center eye. These thin petals are beautiful and whimsical, with an appearance like little silvery-purple sea urchins.

Crystal Fountain blooms twice a year: late spring to early summer and late summer to early fall. Deadheading the first wave of blooms promotes a more robust second blooming. The vine is a more compact variety, reaching up to 7 feet tall. Crystal Fountain has a small footprint and large blooms with high impact, making it perfect in smaller spaces or as a filler between other larger varieties.

Care

Crystal Fountain is a medium sized climbing vine and is a great size for a wall, arbor, or pergola. It requires a support for climbing, but does not need much tying or training to climb up the provided support. Clematis also love their blooms in the sun and roots in the cool shade, so pairing it with shrubs or perennials is not only a beautiful pairing, it is a helpful one as well.

Clematis thrives in moist, well drained soil. Give the roots 2 to 3 feet of space for the clematis's roots. Dig a hole twice the size of the container and about 4 inches deeper to plant the Crystal Fountain. This will loosen the soil around its roots and also help it form some underground stems just above the crown. After planting, backfill using the soil that was dug out and water thoroughly. Water the clematis regularly, especially during dry spells.

From mulching to fertilizing and pruning, early each spring is the perfect time to care for the Crystal Fountain clematis. Add 2 inches of mulch around the base to keep its roots cool, and add some all-purpose fertilizer. Avoid directly touching the stems of the clematis with fertilizer or mulch.

Crystal Fountain is part of pruning group 2. Late winter or early spring is the perfect time to prune the clematis. Hard pruning is not needed for group 2 but is optional the first spring after the clematis is planted if additional stems are desired. Early each spring, prune to shape the overall structure of the clematis. Check stems from the top down and trim back to a healthy pair of buds.

Prune Crystal Fountain again just after the first season of flowers fade, Remove no more than 1/3 of the plant, trimming back to a back to a healthy set of buds. A small amount of fertilizer after the second pruning can be added for a growth boost as well. Prune dead or injured stems anytime during the year.

Uses in the Landscape

Crystal Fountain is a burst of rich purple on its base petals with a fountain of thin lavender petals. Its layered blooms add great texture and vibrancy  to any landscape. It is very easy to care for, has a lovely vanilla scent, and makes a beautiful backdrop or living wall. It grows in zones 4 - 9 and is deer and rabbit resistant, growing at a medium rate. It has a high visual impact and pairs well with trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses. Its beautiful blooms appear twice every year.

Companion Plants

This queen of the vines pairs perfectly with anything! Grow it alongside an evergreen shrub to add summer color. Jewel Box Distylium is a great choice for a shrub with evergreen color to pair with the vibrant blooms of this lovely climbing vine. Its green color is a great compliment to the vine's foliage all summer, and it add an element of interest in the late fall and winter when the vine is dormant.

Clematis can be mixed and matched for a combination of colors and textures. For a variety of purples, blend Crystal Fountain with Diana's Delight, a single-layered, open blooming clematis with big, beautiful periwinkle blooms and sunny buttercream yellow anthers.

The cheerful yellows of the Buttered Popcorn Daylily is a fun combination with the dark and light purples of the Crystal Fountain. The daylily offers large blooms, begins blooming before the clematis and is a repeat bloomer, extending the blooming season and working in unison to invite butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees into the garden from mid spring through early fall.

Pink Muhly Grass displays a fountain of blue-green grass all summer and reveals a soft cotton candy cloud of pink plumes in the late fall. It steps in once the summer flowers fade and does an excellent job of stealing the fall spotlight in the garden. It reaches 3 feet tall, so it will shade the clematis without obstructing the view of its blooms.
