Because it does well in a broad variety of climates, this deciduous shrub is hardy in zones 4–9 according to the USDA. Its glossy, dark green leaves set the stage for its breathtaking, deep crimson-red blossoms, which pop up from late spring into early summer and inject a burst of color into any garden. At three to four feet in height and breadth at maturity, it's an excellent fit for less expansive gardens or mixed borders.
Whether you're planting it as a hedge, a specimen plant, or a foundation plant, this shrub can handle it all. Mulch around the base with a depth of two to three inches helps conserve moisture and prevents weeds. To keep it in a compact form and eliminate any branches that are dead or damaged, prune it after it flowers. If you want robust growth and lots of flowers, fertilize in the spring with a balanced fertilizer.
