Crape Myrtle | Lagerstroemia indica

4 Seasons of Enjoyment:

There is nothing better than a blooming tree. There are limited choices overall, but Crape Myrtles are hard to beat. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Dwarfs to tall growers have been used in landscapes for years and give the gardening enthusiast many choices when planning their landscape.

Crape Myrtles are fast growing and easy to grow and maintain with just a yearly trimming to keep its shape and vigor. Tolerant to most soils, but always well drained is better. Plan your location to have at least 7 hours of sun a day for maximum flower production. Once established Crape Myrtles can withstand short term droughts and wet occasions as well. Crapes offer up to 100 days of color during the summer months when every other tree has bloomed and gone vegetative. As the cooler weather enters, Crapes have outstanding Fall color add to its value as a 4-season tree. Exfoliating bark on mature trees add character in the winter months to add to the overall appeal.

Our Top Recommended Varieties:

Muskogee (Lavender) 120+ days of flowering. (June-October)

If you’re looking for a soft colored Crape Myrtle, Muskogee is our best choice. A strong, and fast grower, this selection will not disappoint. Growing to 25-30 feet high and 20 foot spread at maturity, Muskogee is very versatile for specimens and groupings for maximum effect. Spring foliage emerges reddish, then matures to a rich green.  One of the longest blooming crapes, you will enjoy Muskogee for 3-4 months depending on your zone. Hundreds of flower clusters are thick and are 8”-16” in length. Bark is colorful too, with chocolate hues that adds to the curb appeal.

Pure White blooms. The number one seller of all Crape Myrtles, with good reason, it is the standard for which all have come from it. Envious pure white flowers that start in June to October on average 110 days of flowering. Leaves transform from green in summer to orange, red, and yellow in the fall, announcing autumn has arrived. Show stopping exfoliating cinnamon-brown bark is another reason it is so popular. Fast growing, 20-30 feet tall and wide it will fill any landscape with tons of shade and beauty. Fall displays of color is one of the best as cooler temperatures come to town.

Sioux (Pink) 100+ days of flowering. (June-October)

A Crape Myrtle for all applications. A smaller grower for smaller landscapes is a perfect choice to add summer color in tight areas. Not just for small spots, Sioux is welcomed in the largest of landscapes as well, adding color and contrast as a filler or grouping. Dark green leaves emerge in spring and stay that way through summer giving way to a color blast of orange, red, and yellow in the fall. Mature height is 12-15’ tall and 8-10’ in width make Sioux a good selection for all locations in the landscape.
