Cardinal Wyszynski Clematis| Clematis 'Kardynal Wyszynski'

The Cardinal Wyszynski is a climbing vine that cascades with dark crimson blooms that are 5 to 8 inches across. In the center of each flower, a group of shiny dark pink anthers open to attract pollinators. These ruffled, scarlet blooms appear from early summer to early fall, filling the summer months with beautiful blooms.

Cardinal Wyszynski grows 6 to 8 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. The buds are bright green with dark red stripes, hinting at the rich color of the flowers. Its blooms pop against its dark green foliage. Plant this summer beauty and let it spread across a fence, up a pergola or wall, in front of maintenance or utility items, or around an arbor to impress everyone with its large, rich blooms every summer.

Care

Clematis love their roots in the shade and their blooms in the sun, and Cardinal Wyszynski is no exception. Adding mulch and planting perennials, grasses, or low shrubs to help provide shade will help keep this clematis happy and healthy.

As it grows, the clematis sends out small tendrils that can only wrap around items up to 3/4 of an inch to help it cling to a surface and pull itself upward, so it needs a structure to climb, such as a trellis or wire. Get creative and make living art out of these gorgeous climbing vines.

Clematis thrives in moist, well drained soil. Allow about 2 feet of space between the Cardinal Wyszynski and the next plant for root space. It needs a hole 2 to 3 times the size of the container and slightly deeper to put the root ball and the first few inches of the stem underground. Backfill the soil and water thoroughly. Water the clematis regularly, especially during dry spells. In the early spring, update the mulch and fertilize, keeping both away from the stem.

Cardinal Wyszynski is part of Pruning Group 2. It blooms on both new and old wood and has two bloom times each year: early summer and late summer.  Trim each winter or early spring to keep it shaped and structured as desired. Trimming about 6 to 8 inches of growth keeps it healthy and tidy. Cut it just above a point where it branches, as the branching points hold the buds for the early summer blooms.

After the early summer bloom, prune it again. Up to 1/3 of the vine can be removed. Trim back to back to a strong node and remove dead or weak stems. A second, light round of fertilizer after the second pruning can be added for a growth boost as well. Dead or damaged stems can be removed anytime during the year.

Uses in the Landscape

Cardinal Wyszynski Clematis grows in zones 4 - 9 and has a sweet vanilla scent. Its rich red blooms add a burst of color to the landscape each year. It is deer and rabbit resistant and grows at a medium rate. It is very low maintenance and easy to grow but provides so much beauty. It can be grown along a trellis, fence, arbor, lamppost, or so many other areas. Grow it near your patio to add beautiful blooms and a sweet scent to enjoy every summer.

Companion Plants

Cardinal Wyszynski Clematis pairs perfectly with shrubs, trees, perennials, and more. Pair it with a low shrub or grass for interest and beauty. Winter Gem Boxwood is a great choice for evergreen color to pair with the blooms of this lovely climbing vine, and it is easy to shape and has striking bronze foliage each fall and winter.

Blend varieties of vines for varying colors and textures. Grow Cardinal Wyszynski with Scentsational Honeysuckle contrasts the dark reds with its cheerful yellows and white blooms. The vanilla and honey scent of the clematis and honeysuckle create a warm, inviting aroma that beckons everyone to relax and enjoy.

The refreshing white of the Amazing Daisies  creates a bright contrast to the rich reds of the Cardinal Wyszynski. Both bloom throughout the summer and into the early fall. The complementary colors blend well, and the daisies provide shade for the Cardinal Wyszynski's roots.
