Blackbeard Penstemon |Penstemon x 'Blackbeard' PP30052
Blackbeard Penstemon offers color and interest throughout the year. It grows 2-3 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide. Blackbeard Penstemon produces gorgeous deep purple tubular flowers with white centers. It grows on dark purple to burgundy foliage that produce crimson buds after the flowers fade.
Blackbeard Penstemon is native to the United States and is seen throughout the county. This hardy perennial is a great choice for its unique style and ability to add interest all year long. Its tubular flower shape makes it perfect for both bees and hummingbirds. While it flowers in summer, Blackbeard Penstemon’s dark purple, almost black, foliage adds interest from spring to fall.
Care
Blackbeard Penstemon is truly a sun loving plant. Plant this beautiful perennial in moist well drained neutral soil in an area of full sun with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. Avoid excess fertilizer and add a layer of mulch around the crowns to help insulate the roots. Blackbeard Penstemon should be divided every few years to improve air circulation.
Water the plant as needed to keep the soil moist but be sure not to over water, as Blackbeard Penstemon does not like soggy soil. Prune back Blackbeard Penstemon in fall after the frost has knocked back the blooms. When planting, dig a hole the same depth as the container that Blackbeard Penstemon came in and twice as wide. Water and backfill the soil.
Uses in the Landscape
Blackbeard Penstemon is a versatile perennial that can be planted in many places around the landscape. Perfect for containers, it adds unique color and texture to bouquets and centerpieces. Use as a border plant in perennial gardens or as an accent plant. Plant in containers around the patio to add height and color. It is perfect to plant underneath windows or around mail boxes to add curb appeal. Blackbeard Penstemon is deer resistant, easy to grow, and low maintenance. It grows in zones 3-9 and attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, among other pollinators.
Companion Plants
Cherry-Go-Round Hydrangea pairs well with Blackbeard Penstemon. This stunning hydrangea offers deep red, full blooms that contrast with the deep purple tubular flowers of the Blackbeard Penstemon. Plant the hydrangea in mass, using the penstemon as a border plant.
Pink Double Knock Out is the perfect complement for Blackbeard Penstemon. This gorgeous semi double bloom rose bush adds a sense of elegance and class to the landscape. Plant Blackbeard Penstemon around these beautiful roses to add a contrast of color.
