Magnolia ‘Ann’ | Magnolia liliflora 'Nigra' x M. stellata 'Rosea'
‘Ann’ is one of eight special magnolias that were developed by the United States Arboretum’s cross-breeding program in the 1950s and 1960s. The Little Girl series blooms later in the spring, avoiding damage by late spring frosts. ‘Ann’s’ deeply saturated red/purple tulip-shaped blossoms emerge before the leaves, painting a jolt of color against a spring backdrop. This is a large shrub for a smaller garden, growing 8-10 feet tall. It can also be used as a focal point in a mixed shrub planting by limbing up the lower branches.
